Our walk starts from near the Calleva Arms in Silchester, PH on the map above-there is a car park nearby. Walk across the road, & along Dukes Drive towards the woodland.
A sign along Dukes Drive points towards the woods, the symbol on the sign is The Brenda Parker Way. We go into the woodland along a path, & through a wooden kissing gate with more signs on
So down the path we go, down a hill and across a water course which when I walked it in the summer was quite dry. Eventually we meet a track coming from the right and going down to cross a stream.
We are going straight across it, following the Brenda Parker Way
through a kissing gate & past a sign about Pamber Forest.
Soon we come to another junction-the Brenda Parker Way goes straight on crossing a stony track coming from the right & going left down a slope.
We are going left, following the yellow footpath sign.
Down the slope we go, on a straight trail just like a Roman Road
Soon we cross another Gravelled Path-The Portway, and then the path continues in a straight line, gradually thinning and into grassy & stone track.
Ignore any paths to the left or right just continue in a straight line, soon we cross a stream which was dry this summer.
Soon the path begins to rise, and eventually we come to a wooden gate & a field.
We pass through the gate and into a field, where a straight path runs across it
We eventually come to a hedge, with a sign pointing right and left, we are going left to a gate & stile
We go over the stile, down a path/driveway & onto the road between Little London & Silchester, passing a footpath sign in the hedgerow.
We turn right & walk down the road, looking for a concrete path to the left opposite a Primitive Methodist Church.
The yellow footpath sign points the way along the concrete Farm track which we follow, passing a footpath & gate on the left which also comes from that road between Silchester & Little London.
This is a map of our route now from Little London to Latchmere Green.
At the end of concrete track we come to a wired fence with a stile & hand protectives on the barbed wire fence.
Over the stile we go, and walk along the farmer's field to close to the left hand hedgerow, crossing another stile.
Soon we come to a farm yard & barns, with a couple of stiles, one in front that allows a path to go through the farm & one to the right that gives access to a footpath to Bramley Road.
But as you can see from the map above we are'nt going straight on or right, but left along a farmer's fence line marked on a the map by a black line, and the path by a green dotted line.
So we walk along this fence line
The fence line path meets a fence & a stile and the path goes over a wooden bridge.
Turning round to see where you have just walked from you will see the fence on the left hand side.
We go over the footbridge, into a field and follow the track along the right hand side of this field.
The track comes to a gate and a little lane called Frog Lane that runs from Little London to Latchmere Green.
We go right along the lane, and then left towards the old Roman Town of Silchester.
Our path we have just come from goes through the letter w of work, right along the yellow line, and then left towards a red dotted line which is the path we are going to follow. At a road sign is a footpath sign and a stile leading to this footpath.
The path goes alongside a field often containing animals towards some woodland & a, electrical sub-station.
Soon we come to another stile & wooden footbridge which we cross, and then look for another footbridge & sign on the left hand side.
The map below shows the footpath from Latchmere Green to the Electric Sub-station and the path along a field edge to join the Brenda Parker Way again marked with a red diamond.
We walk along a field edge to join the Brenda Parker Way coming from the right hand side across a field.
We come to a junction of paths, with ours going straight ahead, but another going to the left.
Soon we come to a gate and the path joins a road, with the footpath sign pointing along the way we have come from.
We walk along the road which is part of National Cycle Way 23, and soon we come to a road junction where we go left along Clappers Farm Road towards a Ford.
We pass some houses on the right hand side, then turn a corner with a name sign in the hedge
then approach a Ford, but just before we cross a stream there is a footpath sign and a notice board.
We are now following the Silchester Way, crossing a footbridge
& walking along the right hand field edge to a gate & a track.
You can see that the Brenda Parker Way goes close to North Copse, then along a track, crosses a field, and woodland, then another field to a yellow road.
Often animals in this field, sheep in the summer, but cattle in the winter
At the top of this part of the field is a gate and a sign on the post
Our route goes straight up the track ahead on a permissive path
We now do up the track, turn right, then follow the permissive path across a cropped field
Then through the hedge
And out into and across another cropped field
Soon we come to a road, used as National Cycle Route 23
.
At the road, we turn right and walk along the right hand side, opposite is part of the old Roman City Wall.
There is a notice board here in front of the old wall
Picture of the wall and present St Mary's Church
We pass a footpath sign on the right hand side, just keep following the Brenda Parker Way ahead.
Then we pass through a gate to the Amphitheatre.
The Brenda Parker Way goes the same route
The old Roman Amphitheatre is worth a look around as well as a read of this notice board.
Having visited this old site, we go right & through a gate onto Hill lane again where we turn right, and walk to another gate on the left.
To the right hand side is the old Roman Wall which we are now going to walk along.
We turn right at the sign and start our walk along this old Roman wall with views across to the left hand side.
Views to the left leave a lot to the imagination
Soon we come to the North gate and notice board
We continue around the city walls making our way to where the Brenda Parker Way leaves the Old Roman Town
Now we go along this track towards another little lane. Our route is the red dotted line with red diamonds on; we go along a red dotted line, then along a white line with back sides to reach a yellow road which we cross and walk along a narrow woodland path.
We go through this gate om the way
And then past some houses
At the end of the track is a lane with a sign post
We go along a little path with a sign saying "No Riding"
Soon we come out beside the road from Silchester to Mortimer, with views of the Calleva Arms & the car park at the village hall which we may have parked in.
Then we pass the last Brenda Parker Way sign and that's the end of our little walk of around 7.5 miles long.
